In the year 1956, the parliament passed the standard of weights & measures act 1956 and introduced metric system in the country which bring us to the international level. In Nagaland, the Department of Weights & Measures was introduced in the month of Oct 1968, to enforce the weights & measures Acts/ rules which were passed by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on that very year. Standards of weights & measures (Packages Commodities) Rules 1977, was introduced in whole country and changed its nomenclatures and re- named the department as 'Legal Metrology Department'. The consumer protection subjects also introduced in Nagaland and merged to the 'Legal metrology Department', as an additional subject in 1995 by which department is re- named as 'Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection Department'.
